We woke to a gray cloudy day in Tuscany.
It was suppose to rain and it did. A local man told me that it hasn’t rained here since March. All the fields are as hard as nails but beautiful. Everyone is conserving water.
Our resident cat is getting braver. She now meows at the door for food. Karen is thinking about bringing her home.
Robert, Linda, Karen, Ken, Recia and I headed into Volterra to use the internet at the cafe, as it was working too slowly at the villa. Linda went shopping for her grandchildren, Karen and I went to the Etruscan museum and Ken and Recia went to the tourist Info booth.
At the museum, Annie provided a great description of the “Evening Shadow”, as we eavesdropped on her tour group. The true meaning of the art piece will never be known, but it is theorized to either be a fertility symbol, or the ‘spark’ of the soul of the Etruscans. The bronze statue was discovered in the 1700’s at a farm, where it was used as a fire poker. Before we left the museum, Karen purchased some beautiful silver earrings at the museum gift shop.
After a delicious lunch of homemade chicken soup made by Robert, we headed to San Gimignano to buy some gelato and have a final goodbye at dinner. On our way to the restaurant, “Le Vecchie Mura”, Susan discovered a diamond ring that she finally liked. Once she had it on her finger, it was a no sale. The jeweller at “BITTAGIOIELLI”, showed her one he made recently for Eur 57,000. It was a solitare and Susan instantly loved it. She is thinking about buying it. (There is no way though because she is too frugal.)
The restaurant was once an old stable. They transformed it into modern glass and stainless - classic Italian desgin. It overlooks the countryside. How romantic. The food was so delicious and very reasonable. We ate venison, rabbit, and pork.
While watching a marching band of teens from Denmark performing in the San Gimignano’s square, Karen realized that one of her new earrings was missing! We retraced her steps through the town, and Linda “Hawkeye” Purdy, found the earring just outside the famous gelato store ... one in a million chance!
Back at the villa, Julie and Jim packed for their early departure at 7:30 a.m. and the rest of the gang went to bed.
