Sun. Oct. 16 - The Secret Garden

Our stay here in Tuscany has been like roaming through a secret garden.  Every day has supplied us with perfect light.  Every turn is a photo opportunity.  The food is wonderful!  The people care for each other.  I think the Italians live a long time because the older generation lives 'til the end with their children.  They like to gather each day and talk.  Not through "texting" but face to face.  They walk a lot and the hills are steep.
Today was very peaceful.  Linda, Susan and I walked through the rolling countryside and enjoyed the sunshine as well.  We had a chance to see a fungi display in Volterra.  Tuscany is famous for its fungi.
Milla arrived home safely.  We think Pam, Sue, and John are still in Pisa.  Recia and Ken were delayed in London by fog today on their way here but are suppose to arrive by midnight.  Karen is on her way from Waterloo and should be here tomorrow at noon.
Julie visited with Jim at the hospital and spent some time with him outside in the sunshine.   Jim wrote an account of what he remembers about the bike accident ....

Hi Gang,

Here we are getting some sun at the hospital. I am very happy this is my last night here. Hope you all are having a nice sunday. Jules just left to go back to the Villa for beef soup that Rob and Sue made from the leftovers of the huge steak they had they celebration dinner in Mazzola. The Villa is about 3K down a bumpy gravel road, through a valley and up the other side.
The little Fiat Panda we rented handles it nicely tho.
I have had plenty of time to think about the crash, and have pieced together the bruise's, scrapes, etc with sequence of actions during the inflight portion of the eggbeater. Only mystery is how I got out of the pedal clips when I was ejected, unless I had subconsciously done that in preparation. Or probably it was just 215 pounds of force continuing in a straight line at maybe 30K, when the bike stopped dead against the guard rail post. I think if the clips would have held my shoes would have stayed on the pedals, without my feet of coarse. I'm wondering how high I was above that guard rail before I came down on my head. Hey maybe I did 2 summersaults, that would have been cool. Wish I was wearing my helmet cam! I am sure I came down on top o the guard rail as that is the only explanation for the bruising and scrape on the left shoulder and neck. So I think I was sliding upside down on my shouler and neck, part way through the summersault, and my big head kept me on the road side of the rail. When I hit the shoulder of the road again, my feet had completed the 360 and hit first, then forearm and elbow of the right arm, explaining the rash and the bruising there. No scrapes on legs, hips or chest After this landing I may have lost some consciousness for a while, as there was a puddle of blood on the edge of the road here, about 30 Ft from were the bike was jammed under the guard rail. I understand from John that 2 motorcycle riders stopped first and called the ambulance. Oh John was ahead of me and had rounded the next curve. He came back when I did not catch up at the next turn. Then a group of Canadian cyclists from Quebec stopped, and their Sag wagon took our bikes back to Voltera while John road in the ambulance with me.
I was really glad John was there. He was also staying at the Villa with his wife Pam and is an energy efficiency engineer from Waterloo. He also took the bikes back to the rental place in Florence.
So, 1 more time back in the tube for another scan and I should be good to go. Slowly, that is ok Sisters, Jules has been very strict with me, even in our little walk outside the hospital today. I will listen to her because she is my anchor.
Wow!!!!!! That is the longest email I ever wrote.
Take Care,
See you all soon,
