"The Shadow of Light" by Giacometti is a 2500 year old bronze statue on display in Volterra's Etruscan museum on via Gramsci. It is another naked male figure standing at attention. It is breath-taking.
This was a relaxing day spent by all. Jim was shuttled to Pisa hospital to have an expert check out his broken cheek bone. Good news! No surgery required and he is relaxing once again in the Volterra hospital. Susan and I shopped for "The Shadow ... " and some cold medication. The vegetable and bean soups were delicious at lunch, as was the conversation with Linda and Julie. We checked out the 12th century duomo in Volterra's piazza, and especially admired all the different chapels i.e. The Chapel of the Rosary. Milla and John took a drive to San Jimmie, and Pam and Sue rested at the villa. Julie and Jim made plans to stay in Volterre for another week.
Bugger bridge is being played by the open fire upstairs as I write this.
Tomorrow is the last day for John, Sue, Milla, and Pam. They all leave very early for home on Saturday morning.
In this masterpiece, notice Adam and Eve tied to the tree of life near the bottom with Saint Francis trying to help them from centre bottom. The devil is in the form of a snake-man being held at bay from Mary's foot.
Julie and Linda eating suppe along the main street in Volterra listening to Sue tell stories.
This wooden statue was carved by a famous Volterrans artist and placed in "The Chapel of the Rosary" in Volterra's duomo. Visitors who enter this chapel must recite the rosary. That many "Hail Mary's" and "Our Fathers."
Susan is overwhelmed with the artwork of the duomo in Volterra and Linda looks on in awe!
The 9 of us will celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary tomorrow afternoon in Mazzolla which is a very small village on top of a very big hill.
