Mon. Oct. 10 Thanksgiving Day

Julie, Susan, Linda, Milla and I started the day by visiting Jim in the Volterra hospital.  John took the 2 good bikes and the damaged one back to Florence.  Jim looks great considering he fell off his bike at 50 kmph.  The doctors commented on how strong he is but they want him to remain in the hospital for a few more days just to keep an eye on him.  Julie spent the day with Jim.  The 2 ladies and I headed to Mazzolla which is a very very small hilltop village just a few km from Volterra.  Mazzolla has one restaurant, a few residences, an old church and a couple of horses.  Apparently, the local Italian people love to venture to this little community for dinner so we made reservations for Friday evening to celebrate our 45th anniversary.  We traveled across the Balze countryside in search for an agritourism called Fattoria Lichesto.  Le Balze looks like the surface of the moon and very picturesque.  On our way back to the villa, we stopped at the Coop for food.  Linda has been frantically searching for a knapsack to complete her shopping ventures, and Milla scouted out peanut butter.  The Italians are into Nutella. Julie and John arrived soon after dark and we all sat down to a wonderful meatloaf Thanksgiving supper.  Tomorrow, some of us are off to the clifftowns of Cinque Terre in the north.
